Insights from the Field of Science, Environment, and Innovation in International Cooperation

Case : Dongwon Han(Mr.) – Polar Science at the Edge of the Earth
Position: Marine Biologist, Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI)
Frontiers of the Frozen World: In an era of escalating climate concerns, polar research stands at the frontline of understanding our planet’s most urgent environmental changes. Few know this better than Dongwon Han, a seasoned marine biologist and expedition researcher with extensive experience in both the Arctic and Antarctic. With years spent aboard Korea’s only icebreaker vessel and postings at the Sejong, Jang Bogo, and Dasan science stations, Han offers rare insights into the realities of working in the world’s most extreme environments—and how this work connects deeply to global environmental cooperation and international development.
Mr. Han’s journey began with a love for hands-on marine biology, which evolved into polar research through assignments at Korea’s Antarctic and Arctic research stations. His work contributes to global understanding of climate change, marine biodiversity, and environmental diplomacy.
He describes his fieldwork on Korea’s icebreaker Araon and at the Dasan Station as both physically punishing and profoundly purposeful. Harsh weather, isolation, and communication blackouts are routine—but so is the satisfaction of seeing raw data shape scientific publications and international climate policy.
His experience underscores the inherently international nature of polar research. Collaboration with scientists worldwide, knowledge sharing, and mutual problem-solving echo the principles of development cooperation and scientific diplomacy.
Beyond research, he envisions a role in science education and public engagement—using polar storytelling (plankton, penguins, melting glaciers) to drive awareness and inspire action. His goal is to connect field science with society through content creation, campaigns, or even social ventures.
Advisory to Youth:
“You don’t need perfect credentials—just the courage to take one step forward. In this field, it’s the enduring spirit that survives and succeeds.”
